Editor's Note: After Mike contacted the company in the case below, they called the family the next day and made an offer.

January 9, 2010

I was very recently contacted by a gentleman who sadly lost his brother recently due to on-going medical complications following a heart attack when employed on board the CS Salamis Glory in August 2008.

The family have struggled thereafter in their dealings with the company and although previously receiving Osama outstanding salary whilst on board [two months] I understand they received no medical care or further correspondence from the company at all.

Although it is not really appropriate for me to make direct contact with a company this time I made an exception because it was evident the family of the deceased were up to their eyes in medical bills and debit. I know from personal experience how this feels. Also the judicial system in Egypt would not, I am sure, offer any 'Pro-Bono' work or  operate a no win no fee policy and therefore I decided to dip my toe in – ‘just a tadge’

I contacted the company on their behalf and requested if they would be willing to A) engage with me or B) engage with the family directly regarding this sad loss albeit there is no evidence to suggest the company was accountable for the subsequent fatality.

You may read the correspondence below between the brother of the deceased; Samora and myself and where I understand the family have now settled this matter.

I think it is fair to highlight at this juncture that it does not matter if you live in Boston, London, Hong Kong or Port Said, Egypt – we will answer your call and we will try all we can to help you.

Best regards to you all and Happy New Year
Mike

dear mike.

My brother Osama worked on Salamis Glory for two months and have a heart attack on it. He worked with the engine as an oiler. He entered a hospital in lamasoul then he came to Egypt and after one year without any payment from the Salaiss company he died. What should I do to have his rights?

Dear Samora,

Thank you for writing into Cruise Bruise and sorry to hear of your loss concerning your brother, I am truly saddened and troubled to hear this -

I wonder if you would be willing to tell me as much details as possible regarding the company, treatment he received onboard, what the company have said, what your doctor has said - have you spoken to lawyers and where??

No need to rush the email to me IF you do with to talk but please make it as detailed as possible and we will list your case and also advise you where to go for support.

Try and stay positive
Mike

Dear.Sire Mike.

thank you for your replying and so happy that you give some of your attention to my brother's case. My brother Osama got on the ship since August 2008 and he had a heart attack after 25 days. Then he entered in a hospital in Lamasoul in Greece. There he was made some medical analyses and doctor put a support in his heart. After that he came to Port Said [Egypt] where I live to complete his treatment.

Doctor in Lamasoul said that he shouldn't work or make hard things because he had two bad hurt in his heart, one of them they can cure but another one they advised that he should complete his treatment with a doctor in Egypt. We went to some doctors here in Egypt such as Dr. Hamdy ******. He said that he should take long treatment but we didn't have enough money to do that. After a year he had a heart attack again so he died immediately. He worked on the ship as an oiler.

The regince in Egypt called Hany called me today and said that the company will pay 5000 euro what do you think? Please tell me quickly and what I can do is this money enough or no my brother as you knew died and there are more debts we have to pay them.

thank you again
Samy

Hi Samy,

Interesting they called you suddenly, because I contacted them on your behalf just yesterday after we last spoke.

Sadly I cannot advise you about any settlement and you should take legal advice okay?

Kind regards
Mike Groves
