Cruise Ship Dining
There is plenty to eat, 24 hours a day
By Lena Hunt
Cruise ships are known for their vast amounts of unlimited food served almost around the clock. The quality, selection, and availability varies with each cruise line. However, there are some common things about cruise ship dining that pertain to almost every ship. These will be listed but keep in mind that there are always exceptions.
Generally, the food is not considered to be the greatest and cannot compare to fine dining restaurants and five star resorts. Yet there will be occasional meals that are phenomenal and those are usually during special events.
Everywhere you look there will be food and most ships offer plenty to eat 24 hours a day. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are buffet style in different areas of the ship other than the dining room.

Snacks, grill time, and the dining room provide unlimited food for in-between-meal-time treats. Dinner is usually formal. The ship's dining room offers better quality in food and service so it is recommended that cruise passengers choose the dining room.
At dinner time, guests are assigned seats at certain tables. (Before cruising, passengers select whether they want to sit at a small, medium, or large table in the dining room.) This is a great way to meet other passengers. If you decide that your dining companions aren't as compatible as you wish, kindly request that your seating arrangement be changed. Your request will quickly be honored.
Although dressed formally for dinner and assigned where to sit, you still have the “buffet style” of picking what you want in regards to the entrees being served. If you don't like what is on your plate, let your waiter know and as quick as a wink, he/she will deliver another entree. You can also order seconds and thirds if you wish.
Chefs let out their full culinary skills during the once or twice a week midnight buffets. These moonlit dining events are amazing and a great time to try something new. This is the time when presentation is everything and you will feel that you're dining at a top notch restaurant. Have no fear, however, as the quantity of food is not limited during these late-night events.
Indeed most people do gain weight on cruises yet it is vacation, isn't it? However, if you want healthier, low calorie selections, these are provided and it's just a matter of selecting these choices. Your dietary needs (low carb, low sugar, sugar free, etc.) will be accommodated simply by letting the staff know.
Although just about everything is included on your cruise, the beverages such as soda and alcoholic drinks are not included. Just about everything else including entertainment, shows, movies, and more is included in the cost of the cruise except for the mentioned drinks. Keep an eye on your beverage tab and you should be okay.
Bon voyage and bon appetite!
